Journey Around the World in 80 Days: Midsummer Scene Festival Unveils Epic Musical Premiere in Dubrovnik

20.06.2023

For the past nine years, we eagerly await the start of the Midsummer Scene festival every June. On Thursday, June 22, the musical "Around the World in 80 Days" by Jules Verne, directed by Sean Aite and composed by Leo Elso, will have its premiere for the first time. It will be performed thirteen times at Fort Lovrjenac until July 5. Due to high demand, the organizers invited attendees in Dubrovnik to purchase tickets in advance.

"Everything is ready for the premiere. The actors have been rehearsing for days, playing live music and singing. They are an amazing team. Video projections will take us through all the cities visited by Mr. Fogg and his servant Passepartout. I believe that in 95 minutes, you will be able to travel around the world with us!" said Darija Mikulandra Žanetić, the producer from Brilliant Events.

The City of Dubrovnik provides significant support to the festival, which has also toured around the world. "We have supported the festival from its inception because we believe it is a truly quality and valuable festival that complements the city's cultural offerings. Especially considering that it brings English-language drama programs, which are lacking or insufficient in Dubrovnik's cultural scene. We are excited and happy to see that Midsummer Scene Festival continues in line with the concept of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, nurturing ambient theatre and serving as a kind of introduction to the upcoming festival" said Julijana Antić Brautović, the Head of the Department for Culture and Heritage of the City of Dubrovnik.

Over 100 performances have been staged as part of the festival. The Dubrovnik Tourist Board supports the festival and highlights it in its presentations worldwide. "This festival means a lot to us. The initiative itself partly came from the Tourist Board about ten years ago. The festival complements everything the Tourist Board does. Culture is an important determinant of Dubrovnik tourism. Unlike the rest of Croatia, Dubrovnik is not a resort destination but a cultural destination," said Miro Drašković, the director of the Dubrovnik Tourist Board.

In addition to the musical, which will undoubtedly captivate both Croatian and international audiences, a spectacular closing of this year's festival awaits at Lovrjenac.

Midsummer Scene is a project of the Dubrovnik Tourist Board and the City of Dubrovnik, produced by Brilliant Events Dubrovnik and Honey-Tongued Theatre Productions Ltd. London.
