Yesterday we visited the leading co-working space in Dubrovnik – Akademis Academia.
To answer the first question, you often ask "What’s with the name?” – Yes, the name is a mouthful, but there is a reason. This magnificent newly finished building is student dorm (amongst other things) which gives you the Academia part (think Academy) and the Akademis part comes from the Croatian categorisation of accommodation units.
Anyway back to the important part. This is a very impressive and large complex that can sleep over 500 people, has a restaurant, café, meeting rooms, etc. But we wanted to see the actual co-working spaces. There is a first option which means ordering a coffee and staying in the café or outside on the terrace. The second option seems the way to go.
We were told that Academia has a number of classrooms, and we kind of got the feeling that they were stuffy old classrooms, sterile and boring. It turns out that they aren’t classrooms at all, but reading rooms. All of the have electricity connection, fast Wi-Fi and even cable connection to fixed internet. They are quite, not too big, have plenty of sunlight, comfy chairs and bright furnishings.
So combining option one with option two is the way to go. Grab a coffee in the café bar, and by the way the food and drink offer the best value for money in Dubrovnik, and then pop up to a tranquil reading room to get an hour’s work done in peace.
